To celebrate leap year and the 4th birthday of their burgeoning yoga studio, Speakeasy, BJSR proprietor Ben Rivet and his newly wedded wife Tori hosted a GO W/ THE FLOW (live music and yoga) class for 50 or so of their community members. Little did they know what the year ahead of them would look like. Like the rest of the world, the pair wouldn’t host any more live events for the remainder of the year. The room was packed and sweaty that night, giving the class an intimate experience. The energy of the group finds its way into every raw layer of this 15-track live recording. Much like the moment in which it was produced, the quiet build, aggressive arch, and reluctantly pensive resolution of the album seem to mimic the emotional rollercoaster that was 2020. Wrapped up in the immediacy of live-looping, Rivet’s attempt to find both new and old motifs lands him into new sonic territory. The intimacy of GWTF demonstrates what he’s capable of with just a guitar and mic. The continuous flow from track to track makes the project a perfect accompaniment to a workout, study sesh, or cracking a bottle of wine. But broken down, the individual songs can serve a new purpose, take on new meaning, and might just predict what lies ahead for BJSR’s future. After 8 years of traveling for their yoga/music collab, Ben and Tori have learned that ‘going with the flow’ is about not staying stuck in the past. Instead, an occasional look into the river is a beautiful reminder of the fleeting beauty of life.
